Alexei laughed at the last line. Rasputin did not.

I couldn’t understand his look of fury or the impudent toss of Katya’s head. Why would Rasputin care if Katya wrote a poem for Alexei?

Maybe he thought my parents would be angry at the veiled critique. But this was hardly a room of Tsarists.

Alexei applauded until his hands were red.

“Bravo! Bravo!”

It was the most excited I’d seen him in months.

Tatiana clapped with less enthusiasm. Her head cocked in that way I knew so well—like a dog, though she’d be furious to hear me say it.

“There’s a messenger at the door.”

I glanced at the clock on the mantle. It was well past midnight—too late for post.

Maria joined us. Her priest obviously didn’t believe in witching hours, because he was gaily toasting Katya and Alexei with no apparent plans to leave.

“She’s so talented! If she were a man, she could have been a priest like Rasputin—can you imagine that voice over a pulpit?”

“Quiet!” Tatiana snapped at her.

“Sorry,” Maria clapped a gloved hand to her mouth. “What are you—”

“Shh!” Tatiana hissed again.

We stood in in the babble of conversation, the clinking of glasses, the jangle of Felix morosely picking out notes on the keys of Madame Lessinger’s grand piano.

Tatiana let out an irritated huff.

“What was it?” asked Maria.

“I didn’t hear. You were jabbering.”

“She didn’t know.” I gave Maria a friendly bump with my hip. “And everybody else was making noise.”
